Wanted audio output transformers in Australia

Postby Trackhappy » Wed Jan 31, 2018 10:10 pm

Hi All,
I want to build a stereo amplifier for my personal satisfaction. I have been in electronics (including radio and radar) since January 1980, so not scared of a good project or high voltages. I have loosely decided o nthis one:
http://diyaudioprojects.com/Tubes/KT88-Push-Pull-Tube-Amp/

Does anybody know of an Australian source of suitable transformers for such a project? It specifies Edcor CXPP25-MS-8K transformers. Available equivalents? Does anybody happen to have any for sale maybe?

Thanks,
Glenn Simpson. Brisbane, Australia.

Pat Turner was the only one I knew of, but he retired.

Maybe he knows someone?

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

Thanks. I actually had contact with Pat. Extremely knowledgeable chap, but I just am not up to his standards. I cam not at the level of calculating all the variables he wants, and if something is not right design-wise I would be stuck.
Evatco have a similar transformer that is 7.6K, instead of 8K (1650F or 1650fa). Could I assume that would be close enough?

Tubes are forgiving.

If the design calls for 8K, anything from 7 to 9 will work ;)

Well, it seems the Hammond 1650fa available from Evatco is only 10mA and the Edcor is 125mA, so back to square one. Order from Edcor US directly I guess.

Is this the Evatco page? https://www.evatco.com.au/1650fa-output-transformer Seems to show, "1650FA Hammond push-pull, ultra-linear output transformer 7,600 ct, 25 watts 4-8-16 ohm, 128ma". And the specifications at https://www.hammfg.com/electronics/transformers/classic/1608a-1650a show the same.

And Mouser Australia has it https://au.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Hammond-Manufacturing/1650FA?qs=%2fha2pyFadugSWhhUu568dJ0TtevE6QA7KwAZdlJlh%2fUKakVWgamxTA%3d%3d in stock, free shipping and a better price.

Great to hear of Mr. Turner. Regards.

Thanks Poppa fuse. I was reading the spec on the 1650 and it said 10mA, but that must be some different spec as elsewhere it shows more like 130mA. I am corresponding with Mr Turner, he is around still, but not at all well by the looks. He said he still has lots of OPT, but "none that suit anybody".

I will post when I get started on the project.
Cheers,
Glenn.

And just for the record, Edcor and Bruce responded to say that the Edcor transformer cxpp25-8k is the right one, and select the multiple output impedances. I guess the "ms" must have stood for multiple secondaries.
