Non Remote Control Budgie?

Postby JimDaBomb » Thu Aug 07, 2014 3:59 pm

Is there a PCB and parts list and such for a plain old version without the fancy remote control and lcd and all that? Just a couple knobs (volume/source) something simpler?

You bet! Link to the original 12B4 Budgie Linestage. Sub a GE CL50 for R31 and you're golden.

Would there be any benefit to changing the LM336 reference diodes to red LEDs (and changing values of their associated resistors)
as you did with the phono stage plate loads?

Sure! Not as big a benefit, as one would assume a much greater input signal to a linestage which makes the SNR naturally better (bigger input and less gain). But it still will certainly make a measurable improvement. Make sure you have some good solder wick.

For linestage (note: this is the old DIY Budgie Linestage, not the Budgie Arduino Preamp which already uses this circuit):
1) Change D3 & D4 to a cheap red LED of your choice. Anode to center pin (pin 2) and cathode (short lead) to pin 3. Pin 1 is not used.
2) Change R29 & R30 to 210 ohms (from Mouser use either 271-210-RC or 71-CMF55210R00BER6).

Thanks! I have lots of assorted cheap red LEDs, will probably use the HLMP-6000s as I've used them in other CCS resigns, with good results.
These small red LEDs have a forward voltage drop of 1.56 to 1.57 VDC, and I found that manufacturing "lots" have very close voltage tolerances.
FWIW, Bottlehead uses these HLMP6000s in their various CCS designs.
