ZeeBee's on the slow moving Clementine train.

sweet & juicy SE amp for 1626 Darlings and the 6L6 family

Postby soundbrigade » Thu Dec 01, 2011 6:18 am

I was looking for some tiny trannies for the 5902 amp I have half assembled and ended up here: http://www.roehrentechnik.de/html/darling.html
Intetresting to see the Darling with fixed bias.

Are they the Trotskyites for Triodes, or the Potemkinites for Pentodes (???) ;) (lol)

Or the Solid State Sandinistas, the Castroists for Circlotrons, or the Maoists for Microcircuitry... Or the HitlXXXXXXx gaaaccckkkkk...... =:o (666)

If anything they do look very cheerful, USA commies generally are dour, sour, unclean and grumpy >:o (666) (evil) :[ :'(

/ed B in NC, no marching commies 'llowed around here >:o ;) (lol)

Better tell you that we also have the Transistorists and not to mention SICP(r) - Socialistic Integrated Circuit Party (revolutionary branch).

Started painting the alu/zink chassis white but will scrub off paint and paint it black. Also prepared wooden sides. Black and dark wood looks nice together.
However I managed to cut my nice pieces of mahagony or teak a half inch to short so I will stick with oak sides.

My Duckti certifies the high quality of the paint job :/ .

This is what it could look like. I should have yet another flask of glue paint (???) .

Groucho Marx or John Lennon tees are OK, Karl Marx, Mao or or Che Guevara tees are considered
to be much mo' worser than "nekulturny" by most folks around here >:o ;) (lol)

Transistor Taliban is strictly forbidden >:o (666)

"Red State" means a whole 'nother thing, than what it did back in 1917...

And most folks around here don't even know that "nekulturny" means....

If that S&M duck was hyperdimensional physics , then it could quark you up (lol) (lol) (lol) (lol) (lol)

Then, we have Clementine's crazy country cousin:

Image

No, you're not seeing double, it indeed has five paralleled 1626s and three paralleled 8532s per channel,

for a grand total of sixteen tubes =:o [:) ;) (lol)

Sixteen tubes, and what do you get, another day older and deeper in debt...

Saint Peter don't you call me, 'cuz I can't go, I owe my soul to the vacuum tube store
....

Messed up the black chassis above and dug up a wooden frame for some old and by now forgotten project. Paid my workplace a visit yesterday (I am on sick leave after the gall bladder removal (sick) ) and cut a piece of aluminium for that chassis, though I ought to have a piece of heavier alu somewhere ... should have. (???)

Have ordered a mains transformer as I noticed I had already used the one intended for this one. Also came to think about adding the 6N3 buffer amp to this amp (y) .

Something like this:

Noticing how much space is saved when using PCBs I came with the excellent idea of trying to make up a set of standard PCBs for both SE and PP amp based on standard tubes both octal and noval. *)

The transformer pictured is intended for my 6AQ5SE. Or maybe I should go for 6P1P instead.

The R-Core power trannie looks similar to the PT-877 which was on sale from Tube Depot a few months ago, which has 6.3VAC @ 3A and 260VAC @ 200 mA
secondaries, and 100VAC primary. (these were intended for use in Japan, where 100VAC is a normal line voltage)

They tested it with 120VAC on the primary, and got 7.56VAC and 312 VAC, loaded at the rated currents.
I bought four of them (they were cheap) and used a tapped autotransformer to test one at 100VAC,
and loaded the 260VAC winding with a 40W, 230V light bulb (about 180 mA at 260VAC), and the 6.3 VAC winding with a 6AS7 filament(2.5A)
the transformer just barely got warm, even after several hours' continuous operation.

I figured, use it on 120VAC with 8BQ5s and 8CG7s (or 8SN7), in a modified Clementine or Budgie SE design. The filament voltage might be a tad(about 5%) low,
but it is still within operating specs for these "series filament" tubes... 8SN7s do exist, though they are not really "common", I have a few "Zenith" branded ones.
Lower gain then the original 12AX7 / ECC83s, but then, that's what preamps or line stages are for ;) [:) O:)

I bought mine from www.vt4c.com. There is or was an European and an American version.

I don't know if this was my "build thread", but I am no friend of new threads and I prefer using old ones to save the planet from overheating and melting ozonlayers or whatever.

After years I finally got my (first) Darling together and had it working (fine). I fiddled some with the mains transformer as I had missed the voltage doubler for the heaters. The "original" transformer had the correct 6,3V voltage but another much more handy transformer had instead two 12,6V windings. I went for the first one.

So here's the pics. The big hole in the foreground was supposed to be for a 6N3P buffer amp, but I will try to stuff a tube VU-meter in there just for fun.

In the tube is a 12B4A Darling and from an old speaker cabinet I am planning to make a 6L6 Darling. The 12B4 just needs two screws, some short cables/wires and a hacksaw.

With "two screws, some short cables/wires and a hacksaw" you should be able to fix almost anything that confronts you in life.

Not tested yet, but I finally wired up the 12B4A Darling. (banana)
