Got Some Nice Wood

Postby Hotsauce » Thu Mar 17, 2011 1:16 pm

I bought a nice Claro Walnut slab.

The plank is appx 75" long, 20" at the widest spot, and ½" thick. Planed both sides. I still need to sand it. The picture below was taken dry, so the color will pop considerably once its oiled up.

I'm playing with my box sizes, and trying to figure out my cut sheet so I can have enough to make matching cab and head case.

That takes a variety of finishes nicely (y)

Cheers!

I'm going to do oil finish, I'm pretty sure. Once I have a couple of little scraps I can test a few types.

Believe me I used restraint in the title, This is Crotch Walnut...

Great choice!

Of all the finishes I've tried, Watco Danish Oil was the best ;)

Crotch walnut? Priceless! (lol)

Cheers!

I see Watco Danish Oil, at the store, is that it?

I wanted to see how it will look done, so I gave it a wipe with alcohol.

Gorgeous! :))

Watco is it (fixed in my post) :$

The natural finish works super. Once cured (I give 10 days here on the wet coast), it can even be gloss/perl/matte spray top coated. Use a test piece first, some topcoats react very badly with oil (peel or never harden).

Cheers!

alcohol will strip away natural oils....bad idea, unless maybe you are right about to apply some finish. could cause the wood to split/warp/twist/crack/bend....

WoW!

What a great looking piece of Walnut. I sure hope you have enough of it for all your needs.

I have used Black Walnut a number of times for Guitar cabinets and they look great, it's my favorite cabinet wood.

Good luck with your project.

BTW... the sawdust is awful... don't breath it.

I'm trying the walnut because of a remark you made in an earlier thread.

Note to anyone who uses Watco Danish oil... I've tried it on some scraps, its very nice, similar to Tung oil, but faster drying. From the smell, I suspect its some mix ofTung, Linseed, and Japanese drier.

The rags you use MUST be carefully disposed of. I had them start smoking up. Soak them in water, and get them out of the house as soon as you are done using them.

The cans are labled boiled linseed oil (at least on the Canuck cans).

I've always used paper towel or 100% cotton cloth when working with it... DO NOT use synthetics, like J-Cloth =:o

There is another reason to build musical "junk" out of nice woods.

speaking of smoking rags, when i was a teenager i was messing around oil painting in my bedroom. i used linseed oil and turpentine, and wiped up with toilet paper and put it in the garbage can. when the sunlight hit it in the morning, it started smoking....my dad was certain i was smoking cigarrettes or reefer in the bedroom, he never bought the true story! those oily rags really can start fires !

I picked up a couple of bubinga boards, about 13" wide.

I don't really have plans for them yet, but the deal was so good I had to take them.

Started working.

I decided to use finger joints, because I'm not perfect doing dovetails(about 30% scrap) and I have ZERO spare wood for this project.

I wanted the grain pattern to 'wrap around the corners, so any substitution of different board would ruin this effect.

This is just pushed together. The gaps will close up almost entirely once I get some glue in there and clamp it, slight warp in the wood.

First coat with Danish oil. Its showing up a couple of glue spots I need to go back and sand off.
