Octal substitutes for 6SC7?

I'm playing with a Fender Tweed circuit-a 5C3.
Not vintage, it's a project homebrew.

I was wondering what other octal tubes might be subbed for the 6SC7 preamp tubes to get a bit more headroom?
For those not familiar, Fender switched to a 12AY7/12AX7 later in this 2x6V6 powered amp.

Preferably with the same pinout.

I am half way through the build of a 2 channel (clean and lead) amp using 6SL7 in the preamp and 6SL7 concertina splitter driving a pair of 6V6 output tubes right now.

Metal bashing is complete, all hardware (pots, tube sockets, transformers etc) are mounted, heater wiring is done and the power amp section is 95% wired.

Will keep you posted (if you'll forgive the pun).

Cheers,
Ian

I built a 5c8 clone with a 6sl7 front end, a 6sc7 pi, into vintage tung sol 5881's.

I think it is pretty nice.

It is cathode bias. if you want more gain, try fixed bias.

I really like the 6sl7/6sc7 tubes for drivers.

Well folks, meet the sponsor of this project!
;)

fett has been a great help to me and is the reason I went into building amps.
There are a few here in the cave that are waiting for a plan.
The Masco is first in line.

Still thinking of a JTM45 for it.

Here is the result of that 5C3.
It was a Grommes 10 Watt that had seen its better days in the gut parts. The box and transformers were good enough to salvage.
I gutted everything else and shoehorned the Tweed Deluxe circuit into it.
It ended up sounding great (in my opinion).
