Again with the 5E1 circuit. A friend told me that the only amp he had was a -gag- solid state. EWWWWWWWWW.

I rode rapidly to rectify this regrettable wrong.

Hopefully he likes it.

it looks rather like a blasting control box from a 1920s quarry or mine... Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_07
cool though, at least it doesn't look the same as everything else out there

This would match a plywood Partscaster pic I saw a while back! Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_06

That gives me an idea, related to the "tiny amp challenge" and that would be a tubed "Pignose" amp. :puppy:

Using AC power instead of batteries would still be OK...

I would be concerned about the potential for rattling.

Crate might have a design patent on it too...

Cool though!

It may not look it but I spent some time on eliminating rattles. Is tightly glued and srewed together in hidden ways.

Awesome job, for some sick reason, I like it... Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_12

I have been wanting to build my son the same 5E1 amp for a while, I probably have most, if not all of the parts. Do you have any photos of the amp?

I have so many amp indeas in my head and so many projects going on, one of them will be the smallest guitar amp head unit... details to follow.

Look here. Essentially the same amp. Dead quiet BTW, for some reason it's easy to make these things without hum or buzz. Don't ask me how cause I don't know.

I like it. Careful and thoughtful construction lies beneath the Marlboro Man, macho look.

I've been lurking but decided to register to answer this post.

Sal, my son built an octal Champ clone (5y3, 6ls7, 6v6gt). I bought a Fender sand amp off of craigslist, removed the electronics, punched holes for tube sockets, transformers, and lug strips.

I showed him how to solder it up, measure voltages, and look at the signal on a scope to check distortion and output power.

It is his favorite amp. Plus it is small enough that the 13 year old can carry it.

I'm a big fan of building amps but had more fun showing my son how to build one. Plus I spent less than $50 (including the original price of the amp).

Go for it.
