18 watt 1974x clones??

Postby djunk » Sun Dec 02, 2007 8:12 pm

I've built a dozen or so audio amps. Now it's time to build something to plug the old LP into.
I've been chatting with Tom McNally about this. He suggested the forum.
I'll paste my last emails. Any input it much appreciated......

Hi Derek ! Been awhile ...

I only built a couple of amps this "season" because
I'm in the middle of a big project at work, and haven't
had much time.

I don't personally have much knowledge of guitar amps,
but have looked at many schematics and sites.

The guitar amp section on DIYTube.com has some good
pictures and schematics. I think you can buy the reverb
tanks and stuff from tubesandmore.com (Antique Radio)

There is a guy on eBay that has nice welded chassis, and
the woodwork and handles and leatherette stuff is available
too.

Could be fun !

Good to hear all is well and your busy.
I've looked into some seemingly good sites.

They have exactly the "kits" to make a cool late 60's, 18w Marshall clone.
My concern is the parts they use. I don't want to sacrifice tone and authentic sound for convenience. Where's the beef? Parts,(caps, resistors, etc.), Transformers, Tubes, Speakers, or all of the above? Mojo offers kits that you can exclude all or any one of them. I'm thinking of doing my own tubes and speaker. Will their kit xfmrs and parts matter? As you know, I'm not much of an engineer type. Any thoughts? Maybe I'll throw it out to the DIYtube guys too.
Best, Derek
