I like wrinkle black powder coat. I've found an outfit around me that will do a small chassis for $25 or so. I wouldn't expect anything to bond well to an old nickel chrome finish. You're going to have to take the old off before the new will stick. Whether you can get away with just a scuff, or if you really need bare metal is a question I can't answer.

Have it media blasted , then you won't have any problems .

I'm thinking of taking a wire wheel and sandpaper to my rustiest chassis then hitting it with a dozen coats of flat black spray paint and calling it a day. Then again, I can't help but wonder what needs to be bare metal for a good chassis ground...

I contacted a local plating company and showed them the 3 chassis pieces including the cage. He quoted me $135 for the set to be redone in nickel. I'd have to bring the cage in stripped first. They weren't allowed to do any paint stripping. The process included them stripping the original nickel off before replating. He said a plating over a plating had about a 50/50 chance of being 100% sucessful, without any defects that would peel. The stripping of the original layer added about 1/3 to the cost of doing any individual piece.

Plating for a mirror finish with any other metal required doing a nickel layer first, to establish the high gloss layer. They could do a 24ct. gold for about 5 times the cost of nickel. That would be about $300 for the cage by itself. Seems pretty reasonable.

that sounds cheap to me. Here in Germany I had the "generous" offer for replating for 170€ per set when I let do 3 sets...
I finally bought new stainless sets from Dynakit-parts. Cheaper even incl. customs and shipping...

I've tried both methods and really depends on what'cha got and what you want out of it (crappy answer, sorry).

Yep! I've checked into DIY plating just a little and it looks like it's very doable on small scale stuff. I thought I might try it first with screws and lock-nuts and tube socket terminals.
