st-70 vs.. any MC tube ?

Postby mati1979 » Sun Aug 09, 2009 2:17 pm

hello, I never had a mc amplifier tube,
I have a st70 now,
My question I always wanted to know which is "better"?
for example: st70 vs MC 40 ...MC 225...MC75 :$
or a difference is the "quality of the tubes"

I've heard those.... hype.

Any good design KT88 amp will easily equal them.

Cheers!

I have a friend who owns a lovely MC225 along with a C22 preamp. Absolutely stunning to look at, especially the C22. But...he has about $4000 tied up in the pair AND about $1000 invested in a bucket of Telefunken 12AX7's for the preamp. He also (for reasons I can't even fathom) feels the need for a $1000 phono stage in addition to the one in the C22! Does his system sound better than my ST70 based one? Yes, I'm afraid it does. How much better? Not $5400 better! He always seems sad and twitchy when he leaves my house...Don't know why... (???)

That question is much like asking what is better a 1957 Chevy or a 1957 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. You could ask any random group of 100 car guys and a I bet you get a 50/50 split. One thing is for sure, you would spend a LOT more money for the Rolls. But what is "better"?
Mike's N-1 Rule: When looking for N number of components to finish a job, you have a 95% chance of only finding N-1 of them.
