Choke needed in stereo 70?

Postby burnedfingers » Thu Feb 07, 2008 7:28 am

I have a stereo 70 that is missing the choke. Can I just bypass the choke and install a resistor in its place?

A 50 ohm, 10W WW resistor will work. There may be some excessive residual 120Hz ripple, but it won't hurt anything. A C354 replacement from Triode Electronics, or Hammond (156R) is around $12.

The standard ST-70 PSU choke is 1.5 Henries, rated at 200 mA and has a DC resistance around 56 ohms. The Triode or Hammond units will fit the mounting holes and are low-profile so they will fit under the relatively shallow ST70 chassis.

Yes, you can. Figuring that the C354 is about 56 ohms, it would dissipate 3.5w @ 250ma; so you'd want a 10W resistor in there. Honestly though, the choke is only about $12 new...

Thanks guys,

I was just going to piece one together quick to play with. I will buy a choke later but for now just wanted to make sure it works.

Some of the Eicos had 20V+ on the B+.
