Edcor ST70 Project on its' way...

Postby SteveH » Fri Dec 21, 2007 4:32 pm

Gents,
I started to stuff my DIYTube driver board today; as well as the SDS cap board. I am *still* waiting for my LM334Z's from mouser; as well as the SMD 330k resistors for the SDS board (It has been 3 weeks and counting...) But I was able to get everything else stuffed.
Anyway; here are some pics of the board:

I haven't heard good/bad/indifferent on those Mojotone caps; I guess we'll see.

Cool project. I'd love to see some photos of the chassis and iron once it's together. I'm curious to see how you intend to pull off the twin rectifier tubes and multiple filter chokes.

Who's got the link to the photo of "the most stuff ever crammed into a ST70 chassis"? You know, the one with the dual toroid power transformers mounted sideways...

Ty,
Well it isn't looking like I can really make the dual chokes work; as paralleling then isn't going to work. Unfortunately I don't think there are any other chokes that are like 1.5" tall that would be >3H either....But we'll see...

Well....I figured out what I will do. I'm going to make a wooden base to sit the top portion of my ST70 chassis in. This will allow me to put a Hammond 159V (1.5H 500mA) Choke under there; where the C354 usually sits. I wish they made something around 4H/400mA; but all of those are the enclosed type; which would be much too large.
The resistance of the 159V is about 1/2 that of the C354, so my B+ will come up a bit; but I don't think it will be much of an issue..Just need to be careful with those 6L6's. Maybe I will mount an additional 159V on the side wall of the chassis in parallel for the extra inductance and resistance ? Not sure what that would do to in terms of coupling, etc though ?

Thanks !

For reference, a sub I have switched back and forth in the Mouser BOM is the LM234Z.

Thanks Shannon.

Here's a pic of the iron:

You may be able to squeeze a larger choke into the ST-70 if you mount it sideways, with the bolts going through the vertical sidewall of the metal chassis. this would mean the width of the choke would become the height. I don't know off hand how tall the ST-70 chassis is, but if it happens to be 2.25", you have lots of choices for mounting chokes like this.
