Recommendations for 12AU7's

Postby joeriz » Tue Jul 31, 2007 9:01 am

I'm looking for recommendations for 12AU7s for Shannon's board. I'd prefer something at or under $15 a piece or so but wouldn't mind hearing about the ridiculously-priced stuff as well.

Thanks!

I used JAN Philips 5814a tubes in mine. I bought a sleeve of 5 for $50 on ebay but they can be had for less.

I have also used NOS 6189s and 5963s with good results. These often go for fairly low prices.

SOme of the vintage tubed HEathkit test equipment (look for color TV dot & bar generators) are loaded with Mullard 12AU7s and 12AT7s. Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_08 Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_04 Last one of those I bought had 6 12AU7s, 3 12AT7s, all Mullard, and four other tubes, the cost was $5, and he threw in two audio generators and a cap checker for free.

Color TV dot / bar generators are normally about as useful as teats on a turtle, but they do yield a lot of good tubes, and the power trannies are always useful.

Back in the 50s and 60s, things were different, the US dollar was King, and most European currency was weak, so that over here, Mullard and Telefunken tubes were considered the "cheap imports" much as Reflektor, Raketa, Sino, Shuguang and "Valve Fart" are considered today
