My latest purchase, another Dynaco ST-70

Postby Sal Brisindi » Fri Jul 13, 2007 10:23 pm

Well,
Today I just purchased another Dynaco ST-70. Its missing every tube except the 7199's, Chassis and cage are in nice condition. Price, he made me an offer I couldn't refuse, $50.00 plus me rebuilding his ST-70. Below it a photo of my latest ST-70, my restored ST-70 is behind it.

I can't wait to play my quadraphonic cd's.... ;)

Regards,
Sal Brisindi

Thanks Tom,
Every once in a while I do get a great deal on something. The amp does work and biases just fine per the previous owner. I will try my spare set of tubes tomorrow and report in the results.

Here is a photo of the 3 ST-70's on my family room floor.. The rear ST-70 is my restored one, to the left my latest find and the one without the cage is the one I have to restore for a friend of mine who sold me the amp.

Regards,
Sal

I had a chance to test out the amp, I installed 4 Sovtek EL34's and a Sovtek 5AR4, plugged her in, the amp sounds great, I could set the bias but it was at 1 end of the potentiometer, amp sounded great then I noticed the plate turning red on one of the EL34's. Time for a complete rebuild. I will place my capacitor order today.

Sal

Hows it coming? Its all done. My second Dynaco ST-70 is totally restored, it was done in July. I replaced all the capacitors, including the quad cap except I installed the upgraded cap at 80/40/30/20uf instead of the stock 30/20/20/20uf. I also replaced the selenium rectifier with a diode and the 2 bias capacitors. I presently have 6L6's in it with a 5R4 just to experiment a bit. It kicks A$$ with the 6L6's/5R4 and EL34/5AR4.

I rebuilt 2 ST-70's in July, I hate to say this but 2 more is coming in the mail sooner or later, its been over a month, I hope I didn't lose my $$$.

EDIT: I received a call today (10/1) from the seller and he gave me the UPS tracking number, delivery should be Wednesday October 3rd.

Saturday I missed out on a PAS-3X on Craigslist.org, 20 miles from my house for $10.00! Like the movie, it must have been gone in 60 seconds...

I do have a PAS-3, 3 PAT-4 and 1 PAT-5 preamp in my dungeon...

I had 2 ST-70's and a pair of Dynaco A-25's and KLH model 6 speakers connected to the amps through 1 preamp playing some tunes, my ears are still ringing...

Regards,
Sal

PS: After the recap the tubes the plates no longer turn red...
