Can Capacitor Swap- 30/20/20/20 to 80/40/30/20

Postby snitch56 » Thu Jul 05, 2007 9:55 am

Can I replace the stock 30/20/20/20 can capacitor with one rated at 80/40/30/20? The amp has all stock components except for a diytube driver card.
Thanks in advance!

Yes you can use that can cap. It can be wired with either 30/80/40/20 or 40/80/30/20. The second stage is where you want the 80mf section because that is where the output power is drawn.

YES! Just wire it 40 - choke - 80 - 6.8k - 30 - 22k - 20. I've done two and both work perfectly. Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_06

Where did you purchase your can or will you use individual capacitors?

I think the cap he is referring to is the CE,
twist-lock, multi-cap. It is available at
AES. This cap improves bass response
over the 30/20/20/20 cap.

I haven't purchased a can yet, I was thinking of this one however.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. This is a new build and I have been trying to decide whether I should go with the can setup or use the chong board.

The Chong board does have the bias supply onboard and is zener diode regulated but then you have a hole where the cap is unless you polish up an old one and just use it as a filler.
However, I have used that same can multicap with no problems. Plenty of capacitance.
Its almost a coin flip.

I'd SWAG the Dynakit an the AES caps are both the same.

As far as cap boards go, how do some get by with a 500v rating and the use of diode rectifiers?

There is a time-honored technique, borrowed from the early days of the Manhattan Project, called "Tickling the Dragon's Tail". In their case, the test was to see just how close to "critical" they could get a mass or Uranium or Plutonium. Scarey stuff...

Running 500V caps in an ST70 or MKIII with SS rectification can be akin to skating on thin ice, picking up live rattlesnakes, juggling hand grenades, or placing too much refined radioactive material into too small of a space, all of which are strongly not recommended... :o

A properly designed cap board uses 300V (or higher voltage) caps paired in series, with a 300K resistor across each cap in order to help share/equalize the voltage This is a good technique, and applicable for higher B+ voltage levels 600V, 800V, 900V, > etc...

Thanks for the advice; I went with the can capacitor. I will let you know how things turn out.
