OK but in all seriousness I wasn't flaming angela ... i mean I did just order 3 transformers from them and I wouldn't have done that if i didn't think they were good.

All I;m saying that it could be a bit easier. Plus sending the credit card with all the personal info through the email is just plain insecure. Emails are wide open for anyone to scoop up.

PS I almost pooped myself laughing when I noticed their return policy Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_16 Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_16

That's why I like Steve ... I can send an email that says
"give me 12 of the octal sockets for cheapskates"
and sign my name and the stuff comes the next day.

The box has "TM" on the top in marker, that's a little
more personal than some computerized stuff !

He tells it like it is. Good to see in this day and age.

Actually, all of the vendors I deal with regularly have some
personality ... we need to support the little guys and be
thankful they are around to support our niche hobby.

I do a lot of online ordering so I am spoiled.
I haven't bought from Angela because they don't have an online ordering system. Guess I will never get to meet Steve.... Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_13

Do I even need a preamp with a
ST70? I saw some mod that puts a volume
control on it, is that possible?

If you are careful, you do not even need a
volume pot on the st70 to connect the
'line out' of the soundcard of your computer
to the st70.

Software mixers are capable of very
fine-grained, incremental volume control.
For my USB soundblaster, all I need to
manipulate is the 'pcm' level and the
'speaker' level in the mixer.

You can even connect the soundcard
to a DAC and the DAC to the st70,
while using the '0gain' level to control
the output. This, however depends on
the capabilities of the soundcard and
the mixer.

Yeah I decided to skip on the preamp for now until I can get something with the RIAA stage as well.

I'll definitely have to look into how to best hook up the computer since I have a lot of music on it.

f you have a USB soundcard, search for 'usb
knob' on e-bay. They go for ~$20. Griffin
makes one compatible with both Macs and
PCs.

My soundcard is an internal sound blaster audigy. So i'll probably have to pick up a better one?

That knob can control anyting. You do not
need a USB sound card for it to control
a soundcard's output.

plinkertrons

Postby EWBrown » Tue May 15, 2007 5:29 am

5814As are also very good 12AU7 stand-ins.

With a little bit of filament re-wiring (use pins 4 and 5, pin 9 is either N/C or internal shield) 6CG7/6FQ7s can be used, these are 9 pin miniature equivalents to 6SN7s. The "plinker" version would be 8CG7/8FQ7.

6GU7s and 8GU7s, too, they're 6V (and 8V) versions of 12BH7. ditto the filament connections.
