Power transformer(s) for st70 clone

Postby kheper » Fri Mar 09, 2007 9:43 pm

I was wondering what options are available for
power supplies other than the PA60. I cannot
find a unit with specs similar to 360-0-360 @
300 ma.

What about a dual supply using the PA135 or
similar?

Is there a Hammond roughly equivalent to the
specs of the PA60?

A torrod is out, because it might make the
amp look too 'industrial'.

Why not give a DynaClone PA-060 from Triode a try ?
They are improved over the originals, and run cooler.
There really isn't anything else (that I can find) with
that current capability, and the triple filament windings.

I agree with Tom, the Triode tranny is the BEST out there.

The only real problem you will see nowadays is over stressing the 5AR4 rectifier. It was marginal at best when the '70 was new. With improved driver boards, power trannies, cap boards etc, the 5AR4 ain't gonna live long. Maybe a GZ37 would be a good choice?

I suppose the PA 60 is the only game in
town for st70 clones. I was looking for
an above-surface-mount power tranny,
so I did not have to nibble. I recently
got a punch set and thought I could pull
it off without resorting to the nibbler.
They seem to deform the metal.

Your still in luck, Ned at tubezone sells end bells that will stand the PA-060 upright, same size as a MK-3 trannies.

You might think about investing in a Dremel tool. I made perfect cutouts for the transformers this amp, in thick aluminum, that didn't even need filing. You use the Dremel "cut off wheel" which is a small abrasive disk. Wear safety goggles.

Thanks Tom. The perfect solution for me
is a surface-mounted PA 60. I'll look into
the Dremel tool.

Search an earlier Dremel post mentioning the heavy duty cut-off wheels. The standard ones wear out fast.
