Choke....substitute???

Postby jeffdavison » Thu Nov 30, 2006 1:58 am

Looking at a Bournes miniture toroid choke to possibly replace the C-354. in the ST70

Not being an EE I came here for the straight poop.

The 354 is rated @ 55 uH & 55 ohms

the Bournes that I am looking at is rated at 56 uH at .06 ohms.

Can the Bournes choke be used as a substitute? What changes to the rest of the circuit need to be made? Could I just put a 54.96 ohm resistor in serial to make it work?

Reason into why Im looking at it is it's size / compactness mostly but toroids have some other bonuses as well.

oops,,,, got the specs wrong.... my bad

going to have to do more research then get back to y'all

question still remains.. If I find a torois with the same Henry rating ( 1.5 H)
but lower DC resistance can it be used? mods? etc

A DC choke would probably have to go on a C-core or EI core, I don't think toroid cores like DC very well. At least I remember the toroid folks complaining that Japan was a bad place to try to sell toroids due to some kind of DC offset in their line voltage (which is 100VAC).

Hi Jeff,

You'll probably find that high inductance chokes for audio are a little difficult to source compare to RF chokes. Even my boss - an RF engineer - was surprised when sourcing a .5H choke for a wide bandwidth signal generator. Hammond will probably turn up as the manufacturer during searches.
