Small SE amp with no pre-amp

Postby Vernrich » Wed Jun 15, 2016 11:50 pm

Hi, new to the forum, tinkered with tube stuff a few years ago and would like to get back into it. A while ago I picked up an old console with a cool little SE amp inside. It was connected to the radio/turntable by a cable that provided an input signal and also power. The power amp has the power transformer, power caps, output trans and output tubes. The pre-amp tube/stage is located on the radio/turntable chassis. I would like to just run the power amp but need to add an input tube or input stage. Can anyone point me in the direction of something easy to setup or should I buy a small pre-amp to hook up to the power amp?

A schematic would help, can you trace what you have?

Many smallish (and biggish) tube power amps can be "converted" into full amps by just adding a 50 ... 100K audio potentiometer to the input. Without having seen your amp a fair guess is - it can be done easily. (Propably :/ )
