Hi all guy's

Postby LW1DSE » Wed Aug 06, 2014 10:12 am

Hello from Buenos Aires, Argentina. My name is Osvaldo, callsign LW1DSE, ham and audio DIY'er.

Currently I'm designing a SMPS that only uses tubes in all it stages, and is working pretty fine. It is a SEPIC + Cuk converter, input 275V and outputs ±350V @20mA each one. Final stages are 33GY7, and 35W4. PWM actually is a 6U8 and a 6C4, DC Error amp is a 12AU7 plus a 6KE8, and 3 neon lamps. Main rectifier is 3DG4 and toroidal transformers made of my own, rewinding commercial trafos. This project, I called it "Tube SEPIC II" (There was another previously) is for an audio amplifier, also using only vacuum tubes (Valves). Some tubes will be replaced with compactrons, when I can get them.

I have photos of this "Frankenstein" currently under development (I don't know how or where to paste them).

Sorry if my English is not too good, I'm Spanish speaker naturally. I learned English when boy and I am not using automated translators.

Best regards.

Hello, welcome! :))

Your english is very good. Much better than my spanish :$

Valves work well as SMPS devices.... people often forget that the first SMPS devices were tubes - horizontal line outputs in televisions!

Look forward to hearing about and seeing more in the way of designs of your experiments.

Cheers!

Cool tube project you have going. Can't wait to see some pics. Look to the lower left and click the "Upload Attachment" tab. You can add your photos pretty easily.

Mmmmm, no. Horizontal line output tubes need to be a linear current, and transition (Flyback) is resonant, in SMPS linear is de facto, when switching a voltage to an inductor, supposing not too high to saturate the core and the reset is at the output voltage. In fact, I need the tube conducts all he can, in HD the conduction is a controlled trapezoidal current wave.

Pentodes switch very well, perhaps I´m using a too large tube, but is what I have at hand.

Expecting for some photos... Wait a bit. Soon.

Geez - never tried this. Can you attach a separate AVI file? Or can you upload to YouTube and link?

The video is mp4 and is ±1 min long.

I have no youtube account.

:-))

OK, boy, don't worry. I'll make a new thread specifically for the project, then we see what to do.

Wait, soon I'll be here.
