Has anyone DIYed a anode cap?

Postby DeathRex » Wed Mar 12, 2014 12:28 pm

I wanted something other than Chinese porcelain. Anyone made their own, that insulates?

Can you modify a spark plug boot? Put some bright yellow Accels on her.

A spark plug boot is a great idea, though I've gotten zapped by touching one when the engine revved. I was thinking of glass as the insulator - to make it look like something resembling retro-telephony, but smaller and a hole through one side of it.

Maybe I can rummage through a junk yard and look.

I can't do anything with glass, it's like kryptonite in my hands. I can do abit with plastic, but I don't have any plastic that pretty.

I would like to suggest "vävbakelit", it's bakelite laminated by cotton fabric. Easy to handle and machine and withstands temperature pretty good.

Looks llike this:

I did it with spark plug boots. Had to trim it a bit but it worked.

You could if the anode connectotors are thin use a "sockerbit" (sugar lump):

I have had plans of using DC-connector as well. They come in many different sizes.

I used a wooden dowel to make a few. It wasn't easy, and I'm sure the wood, at some time will crack, but man is it cheap to make. Probably be better to use in on 6F8Gs than 13GB5s. That's high voltage multimeter lead, and there's a brass contact inside.

I made some anode caps from white Teflon for a 6BG6 amp a long while back. Teflon is easy to work with but a bit pricey if you have to buy some. I made these from some 1" diameter bar stock left over from a work project.
