5U8C / 5Z8C Rectifier Tube

Postby Ax1 » Mon Mar 03, 2014 2:46 pm

Can anyone help me with this. I am building a new amplifier and want to either use 2 866A mercury rectifiers, or a 5U8C (5Z8C) rectifier.

I will be powering 2 6c33c's with them. Probably a duplex se. Only 1 channel needed. But I can't really find any information on the 5U8C (5Z8C) tube. All I can find is this page: http://www.jogis-roehrenbude.de/Russian/5U8C.htm

I have also found a Russian datasheet: http://istok2.com/data/303/

I have only used SS rectifiers before in my last couple of tube amps. Do I connect pins 1 and 2 together? Does anyone know where I can find an example schematic, and how I can workout the output voltage and current?

Looks like 1 and 2 are filaments and pin 3 is internally tied to pin 2. Of course, the next 2 pin outs show 1 and 2 internally tied together and pin 8 being the other filament pin. The filament is 5 volts @ 5 amps. 1700 reverse volts, 420ma each plate forward average DC, and the plates will do 30 watts. It is almost twice as powerful as a 5AR4.

It will drop 40 volts at 400ma. Hard to find a rectifier for 6C33Cs.

Thanks, looks like the heater is 1 and 3(8) and 2 can be used for the output.

How did you calculate 40V drop at 400ma?
Any idea what the plate resistance is?

Not going for OTL, but I found a schematic using a 5U8C:

It's more like 50 volts.
http://rutubes.com/articles_for_descrip ... sheets.htm
You'll need to get windjview to see it. http://windjview.sourceforge.net/

A 5AR4 has 17 volts dropped at 300ma (5.1 watts). The 5C8S will drop 40 volts at 300ma. That's gonna be some heat(12 watts). (666)

But then the 5U4GB will drop 55 volts at 300 ma. (16.5 watts) (666) (666) (666) (666)
Gotta love those GZ34s.

The 5C8S is supposed to fit into the same sockets as the GU-50.

Thanks, didn't notice the 5C8S you referred to was the same tube as the 5U8C / 5Z8C
