Carbon Composition Vs. Metal Oxide Resistors for PSU overhau

Postby Proschuno » Tue Feb 04, 2014 4:18 pm

Taking apart my 52 year old PSU, i've come to notice that some of the carbon composition resistors have maybe absorbed moisture with age and are in need of replacement. However, I was thinking of replacing them with Metal Oxide ones, as most of these are flame-resistant/proof, and more easily obtained. But Carbon Composition I think might deal better with surges… from what I read. What does everybody think?

The PSU can supply about 500V @ 100ma, the HT taps can produce 400v-0v-400v.

Metal oxide are good with surges as well.

Metal film are little fuses ;)

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

Just keep an eye on voltage rating in the datasheet.

Yes!

If you use Yageo RSF (which are inexpensive), 1W and 2W are rated 350V with a 600V overload.
