UTC O-10 whats it for?

Postby Blair » Sat Jan 18, 2014 8:27 pm

Hey guys,

I was over at a guys house earlier and he handed me one and said he had a few more if I wanted a pair. He just didn't know where the others were. What are these for?

Thanks!

O-10 is a Push-pull plates to line transformer, 30,000 ohms plate to plate, secondary 50, 200, 250, 500 and 600 ohms. Fairly low power, think in terms of milliwatts, not watts. These are the diminutive UTC "ouncer" trannies, they're very small. 600 ohms was the "industry standard" line impedance for broadcasting and most "pro" audio, back in the day.

Might be good for a dandy little line stage, use a 6J6, 6DJ8, 6CCG7 6FQ7 or 12AU7 as the "power tube" in P-P, then use the 600 ohm secondary for the line output. Might also be good for driving very efficient 600 ohm headphones. Flea=powered PP amp for each channel. [:)

MC usage, connect the cart to the low z winding, the 30K winding to the input of the phono stage.

Grab 'em if you still can, they're a treasure!

How does it account for RIAA correction for MC carts?

I was a little taken back when he handed it to me. I was already walking out with a few transformers that were pretty cool. One beast I will post in another thread. I can't figure it out.

The guy has lots of really nice gear. I asked to pay for the stuff, but he handed me a box and sent me packing. This little UTC is the one thing I was curious about though.

Hi Blair the O-1 & O-2 would make better MC step up devices , the O-10 would make a better output transformer for a PP preamp . The RIAA is taken care of buy the preamp , the transformer is a passive step up device .
