New Tung - Sol KT - 150 Output Tube

Postby hilldweller » Sat Sep 21, 2013 5:25 am

Hi all,
New Sensor Corp. has released a new Tung - Sol KT - 150 output tube. Egg shape glass, 70 watt plate disp.
Does anyone know anything about these or where to get them?

From what I've read, they will be released to the public October-ish.

I have my reservations.... it will take serious power iron just to run them and custom output iron if you want to run them at their limits. 845 or other transmitter tube might be a safer choice, as you aren't hogtied into a single manufacturer.

I think Bob's iron will work for these. He will sell trannys only if you want for his M125 amps.

Some specs and curves for the KT150:

http://www.pyndt.dk/Tung-Sol%20KT150%20Curves.pdf

Limiting values
Filament voltage (AC,DC): 6.0V-6.6V
Plate Voltage, DC: 850V
Grid 2 voltage, DC: 650V
Grid 1 negative voltage: 200V
Plate dissipation: 70W
Grid 2 dissipation: 9.0W
Cathode current: 275mA

What leaps out first is the 650V max on the screens. The transconductance is very close to the KT88, too.

Transconductance, mA/V: 12.6

600Vdc in SE triode mode should net you greater than 20W audio output. Many output transformers are able to handle 600V. In the specs, a transformer with a 3K input impedance is used with 400V on the plates.

600Vdc * .116A = 70W

116ma (or less) idle bias per tube in SE. You'll need a power transformer with gusto (current-wise) to run them. A transformer used for PP could be used for 2 KT150s in SE. 430-0-430 @ 300ma (or better) should do it.

Up to 2A of filament current =:o

Drop those in a ST70 with a stock PA-060.... Image

I would love to use that as a PSU pass tube (love)

Those things look like a spaceship. That is one reason why I might snap up a quad (dual mono).

I am looking into a 120W UL amp using a pair for a fully balanced distant future project.

They are going for around $100 a pop now. More expensive than a 211, an 813 and most 845s.

If four KT-150s are good, perhaps ten will be better (666) $) $) $) @=

Probably more like this:

Now, who will be the first to build up a Clementine with KT150s [:) O:)

A PA-070 (or a similar PT) should be OK with two of these monster tubes...

Impressive looking amps and equipment from Ayon...but phrases like "3-way Inverted parabolic resonance correction system" , " Harmonically signal flow distance wiring", and "Crossover magnetic field interaction control" make my head explode... =:o (stop)

It's difficult to tell from the poor quality fuzzy picture of the KT150, it appears to have two plate structures inside the globe. (much like 6KN6 or 40KD6)

This photo is clear, but should be rotated by 90 degrees, to reveal if there are two plate structures, or just one.

ImageImage

So it could be similar to having two KT88s or 6550s connected in parallel, inside of one rather rotund bottle, just call it the obesatron, or perhaps the pregnatron ;-)

I did a quick comparison between KT150's rather meager specs, and those of the KT88, and the big glass egg looks very close to two paralleled KT88s.

FWIW, I have bought fro this seller previously, he has always been good tome - mostly matched quads or octets of EL84s, and all lots were very closely matched.

I'd say, save your roubles and just use parallel KT88s or 6550s, either option is about half the cost of these expense-a-trons, at this point in time.

Just another SWAG, my dva roubes' worth...

I Love that comment. It made me laugh when I read it (lol) .
