Pwr supply question

Postby Rick90405 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 2:20 pm

Hi everyone,
I am building a JE labs simple 45, old version.
My PT is Hammond 272DX, I get a B+ of 420v from a 5U4.
I used the 2 red leads to the plates, red/yellow CT to ground.
From 8 pin 50ohm resistor 10uf cap choke 47uf cap.
Any ideas? Where did I go wrong?
The 2.7k resistor on the B+ to the OT have burned out.

Your 420 B+ is unloaded.

Not supposed to be a resistor from B+ to the outputs.

The rest of it seems right.
At first I wanted to be a ET. Now I are one.

Thanks for your answer, but schematics show these resistors, unless they should go at another place.
More thinking to do.

Please post the schematic you have or direct us to them

The schematics are the first version of Jelabs simple 45, not the srpp.
My copy is pretty bad, but I can try to scan it.
It's no longer on the website.
I will see what I can do.
Thanks.

It's in Tom's site. http://www.wdox.com/pics/simple45sch.jpg
The 2.7K 2W is a filter resistor from B+ to the 100K that feeds the 6SL7.
B+ should go from the choke to the output. Fix that and you might be good.

Thanks, I will try.
Still worried about having 420v of B+, could that damage the output trans?

The output transformer should be able to take 630 or a little higher.

JL used a 5Y3, using a 5U4 your B+ will be a little higher when loaded, like 340-350. To lower the B+ you can insert a resistor infront of the 50 ohm, or get a 5Y3, or 5Y4, you have to move a wire in the socket for a 5Y4.

Yes I noticed, on Tom schematics, it says 5Y3, will dig in my rectifier box to find one.
Cheers!
