Winders?

ask your general tube related questions here

Yes,

I've seen high B+ on EL34s, but I don't want a tube rectifier, and I will have close to 550V when it's all said and done whereas, I can use a different transformer and have the more desirable 430-475V without issues for 1/2 or less the price.

Let's see how the preamps move and it will determine whether I buy Transcendar or Edcor:)

Thanks!

Have you thought about using a six-pack of KT77s:

If your building from scratch you could use them with a choke input or a voltage regulator tho get the voltage managable from the power transformers .

I personaly woud go with a 10Henry 500 ma choke .

Thought of some other affordable transformer winders.

Check out are Bud Purvine who doesn't have a web site. He is in Bothell, WA and is a nice guy to talk to. He is mentioned on diyaudio etc. as his iron is well liked. He makes transformers in about 4 different levels depending on the budget.

Another guy to talk to is Jack @ Electra-Print. in Las Vegas, NV & he has a Web Site.
Many happy users mentioned on the web.

Here is the Transformer Suppliers list from diyaudio:

They claim to have "low cost" double C core PP outputs. No prices on their site. Might be worth it to get a quote.

Thanks Guys!

Yeah, the Trafomatics look good, but at the cost of a wicked lead time. I think I will build with Edcor, and if I really think I need more than 100W, I will leave room to machine the extra holes for another pair of EL34s and The Teanscendars are bigger, so they will cover the hardware holes from the Edcors.

Thanks!

Anybody knows of one of these guys does high voltage safe transformers?

Edcor passed on a commission to build one with 5KV WVDC insulation because of the quantity of specialized materials they'd have to buy :(

Cheers!

Hi Gregg,

During my transformer fishing trip recently, I saw no companies offering up front anything like that. I always see these mega transmitting tube amps, and wonder where they get their transformers.

Those are special, custom-ordered and manufactured "monster" trannies, probably made by the big companies like GE, or Westinghouse, or perhaps imported from Germany or Switzerland. $) $) $) $) $) LONG lead times...

It's looking like I'm SOL.

- Mercury doesn't go that high.

- Transcendar has retired and no longer doing custom work.

- Hammond can, but I have to take 50 :/

That leaves Lundhall $) They at least *used* to wind for full voltage 811 amps with 3-4KV B+.

Cheers!

Transcendar is no longer making transformers, or just not custom work!?

Gregg

I thought MagneQuest did custom ones? What about O-netrics & Electra-print, & Dave Slagle of Intact Audio.

Good luck!

Slagle's not set up for that HV I don't think? I'll ask, though.

MQ has never, ever returned an email to me (I've contacted them in the past before I discovered Edcor). I'll try again.

I forgot about Electra-print.

O-Netics I may meet in a couple weeks at Audiofest. I'll ask.

Cheers!

I did talk to Mike (MagneQuest) in the past asking about 8-10K PP OPT and he told me about his Z-565's. Nice guy to talk to, maybe not into email or it wasn't reliable at the time.

You may get a hold of him in the evening.
