Does physical size of capacitors make a difference?

Postby rh2music » Thu Jan 25, 2007 8:35 pm

When replacing caps, does the physical size make a difference? As long as the cap rating and voltage rating are the same? I purchased a large assortment of Mylar Polyester Film Capacitors from justradios.com last summer. they are rated at 630volts. They are going to replace caps in a 50's or 60's tube pa amp or organ amp.

What is the difference between these and say the Sprague orange gumdrops?

Thanks for your advice... Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_07

The size makes no difference. The main reason for size differences for the same value is the physical construction (paper in oil, etc).

Hi All,

Orange Drops use discrete polyester film and metal foil, which makes them a little larger physically than an equivalent metallized film cap. However, an Orange Drop wannabe that's the same size as the real thing is not necessarily F'n'F. A guitar player might be able to hear the difference, but in a PA amp . . .
