Monoblock kit

Postby kt88pppamp » Sun Oct 08, 2006 5:40 pm

I may purchase two of the these kits at the link here http://www.tubedepot.com/diy-k11m.html

One problem is the volume control. I wish to control both monoblocks with one volume. I think a double gang volume pot may work but they may be gounded commonly. What should I do here?

Thanks?

AES has the same kit for $89.50 mono or $139.50 for the stereo version.

These are nice sounding amps, well worth the price! If the kit has plastic sockets, throw them away and get ceramic sockets.

Hi King,

You can indeed use a dual pot. The end terminations and wipers are not usually tied together so you can use one dual pot to control two monoblocks. Just use one section for each amp. I've used a dual pot from Radio Shack (if you can find any stores left that have any parts remaining) but I don't know the RS part number. It's an ALPS dual 100K ohm pot. I also bought a small plastic enclosure from RS that has a metal front plate in which I mounted and wired the pot. I use some phono jacks mounted on the back and separate input cables with phono plugs on them to make the output connections. I just feed the cables into small holes in the rear of the enclosure. Very simple.

Keep in mind that the ground end of each input cable will be tied together at your source usually if it's a CD player or similar.

Enjoy the amps! They look like a nice starter project.

Regards,
Ed Long

Hi All,

For the uninitiated, AES is Antique Electronic Supply. http://www.tubesandmore.com

I listen to a lot of records, what would make for a good phono preamp?

Yes it will connect to an amplifier.
Here is the 2 page manual and a close up.

The input impedence of the amplifiers are 100k ohm. The output of the VP129 says its 100 ohm. Will this be a problem?

A lower source impedance feeding a higher input impedance is fine. You just can't go the other way. Most solid state broadcast equipment I deal with has output impedance of about 100 ohms, and input impedance of 10,000 or higher. The beauty of this is that you can bridge one output to many inputs with no loading.

Cassette Player
Tuner
TV audio output

They are all consumer type solid state devices, so the output impedance will be low - generally 1000 ohms and under, and the level is typically about -10. They will all drive the input of tube type amplifiers with no problem. Except for older tube type preamplifiers without a low impedance (cathode follower style) output stage, almost all outputs are low impedance these days.
