Hammond PTX mechanical question

Postby Core32 » Wed Feb 04, 2015 6:32 am

The 273BX transformer I purchased has all the wiring exiting the base of the transformer in two spots.
http://www.hammondmfg.com/pdf/EDB273BX.pdf
The drawing associated with this transformer has nice enough detail except recommend locations for the wiring to pass through the mounting panel below.
I can measure and get it close but thought I would ask if anyone has seen a Hammond drawing with this detail added.

I do not have a drawing, but I would wager that holes spaced about 2.8-2.9" apart (outermost extremities of span "E") should be mighty close for the respective primary/secondary wire bunch portals through the chassis

Thanks. I'm sure that's close and I can measure the actual.
The Edcor OT transformer drawings I'm using show the suggested opening size and location on the drawing.
This is DIY. I should not be so anal. :P

The "gotcha" on those wire holes is more often about the clearance from the top plate to the bell if you use a grommet (I use Heyco plastic 0.625" ones). Many transformers don't leave much of a gap for the grommet, so you'll kick the hole out (away from the tranny) another 0.250" to 0.350" than the exact calculated measurement. The wires don't seem to mind it. ;)

If a grommet/passthru will *not* fit, just deburr the hole nicely.

Grommets were in my plans. Thanks for the heads up.
I'll check the clearance under the bell for sure.
What diameter hole do you drill for the 0.625" Heyco ones.
Inevitably, for my clumsy fingers, the recommended size for grommets is usually too small for some reason.

The Heyco plastic things are much nicer than rubber. .625 = 5/8" ... I use a Greenlee chassis punch.
Just snap 'em in. Very low profile above the chassis.

You can see amps built with them on my web page at http://tmamps.com

Look on the right in this pic:

I use the parts as templates, only measure to center things.

Mouser pn# 836-2073. These take a .625" hole for the plug, and the ID is .500" - usually enough for the wires of a typical transformer:
