OTL Tube amps? Whats up with these?

Postby hilldweller » Thu Nov 07, 2013 6:54 am

I've been reading about all kinds of tube amps to expand my knowledge and decide where to go next. I was intrigued about what I have read about OTL amps. Some swear there is no better and the sound is un comparable to any other amp design. I know that this may go against those that are grounded in the output transformer norm. I try to think outside the box when considering anything worth while.
I know there are some very knowledgeable people on this forum that are designers, engineers, ect. My question is for these people. What is your take on OTL amps? Have you ever built and used one? What are the pros and cons?
Your guys help is always appreciated.
I have read Bruce Rozenblits books on the OTL subject as he seems to be the OTL guru.
Analog is Real! Experience it!
Digital leads to trans humanism. Not good.

It's just another configuration. Different, different sounding, no better, no worse than transformer types, just more specialized.

Rosenblit is probably the only one who even bothered. IMO, I think the guys at Head-Fi are heads-up (pun intended) on OTL, just scale up.

Cheers!

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

I would put David Berning near the top of that list.

I have OTL and OCL 6AS7G Gen. Electric and I can tel that the sound is really un comparable, very different and better,... with deepest scene ad more details than ampl. with OT, where the sound very depend of quality of iron and coils of OT, that define sounding of amplifier.
The cons is that I can't build OTL 2A3 or 300B, because prices are very high for 6 - 8 tubes..... (lol)
After using this my ampl., I don't use more my good projects SE 2A3 RCA and SE 300B JJ.
Projects: OTL 6AS7 Gen, Electric, SEs 2A3 RCA, 300B JJ, 6S4S, 4P1L, EL11 Telefunken, 6AS7 RCA, 6S33S, 6S41S, 6S19P, headphone ampl. OTL Loftin White 6AS7 RCA....SE E84L&E80CC Siemens&Tel-n.

What about 500 watts of OTL coming from Atma-Sphere's ML3: http://www.atma-sphere.com/Products/#MA-3
Needs only 42x 6AS7s.

That's 661.5 watts of filament power for 500 watt of audio power , that going to be quite an electric bill , won't need much more heat in the room

It's about feeling the music, not just hearing it. Move some air!

Use MOSFET's.

Seriously fellas, using OTL to perform a SS function is like re-gearing a Honda Civic to pull a 40' trailer. Use the right tool for the job! ;)
