Hammond vs. Sowter

Postby Blair » Thu Aug 01, 2013 6:39 pm

You may not find this as amusing as I do, but I got a pair of Hammond 1650T outputs recently and for grins sat them next to these 200W Sowters. Not bashing the Hammonds. They are a beefy chunk of iron, but look at the Sowter! I know they have an 80W difference, but these Sowters are almost if not heavier than the 1650Ws I have used in the past.

Comparing a Hammond to a Sowter is like comparing a Ford Focus to a Mercedes - you just can't do it ;)

LOL! Yeah, I know, but it's not every day you get to see them next to each other, or at least I usually can't afford to:)

The 1650T is for a PPP 6CB5A pentode amp.

The Sowter is for PPP UL KT120s.

Should be a fun comparison.

It's not only the size that matters - strokes per seconds matter too ... :$ ... I mean the frequency ... :/

I ran a quad of Ultralinear connected KT88 into a Hammond 1650T with a 510V rail.

122 Watts RMS out at just below clipping, 138W RMS in heavy overdrive.

Frequency response at 50W RMS Output (none of this response at 1 W rubbish) was -3dB at 68kHz. On the low end it was flat down to 22Hz with severe waveform distortion setting in at about 18Hz due I believe to core saturation although it may just have been severe 2nd Harmonic distortion as the Impedance due to the primary inductance dipped to similar or lower value than the rp of the output tubes.

Wonder how it would have gone with the Sowters?

Cheers,
Ian

:) we will see. I'm going with PPP KT120s, and have access to gear to test distortion and freq response.
