Orange Drops Priced Outta Sight!

I about had a coronary, $5.36 for a .1uf series 715p.

SBE/Sprague no longer owns the orange drop line of capacitors. They are now officially owned by CDE.

I got a notice from Digikey that they are "discontinued" =:o

Wheather it's Digikey that's discontuning them or the manufacturer, I don't know :(

Might I suggest Panasonic ECW series as a replacement? They sound closer to WIMA, but are a fine compromise.

I noticed that too! There's no way I am going to spend $5.00 on a run of the mill cap, or even a fancy one. I like the Panasonic caps also, if it's the "gumdrops". I'll probably use those when my supply of Russian PIO caps dry up.

Just last night I was wondered where all the money was going on an Eiclone BOM, as all the resistors were 33% cheaper than 6 years ago (the last time the BOM was updated). Yep - those CDE 0.1uF, 600VDC caps were the culprit. :'(

I need to do cap distortion sweeps sometime like Douglas Self does in his book, Small Signal Audio Design. I can swing 45Vpp with my Boonton, which should be plenty.

Solen Fast Caps are a substitute for Orange Drops. Couldn't find any on mouser or digikey, however. $1.95 .10 uF/630V

[EDIT]

Stock up before they vanish.

715 .1 uF/600V $1.45

I recently ordered two 60 watt 4200 ohm output transformers from Edcor and got them in just over 2 weeks! Methinks these a popular seller 'tis why.

Out of curiosity, what type are they? The Yageo resistors I like (carbon film) have gone up 300% in the past two years! =:o

I disagree. But it's a preference ;)

Cheers!

Oh, looks like AES and CE Dist have their "decent knockoff" 715/716 series still reasonable:

i recall hearing the Fukushima nuclear disaster put some electronic components manufacturers out of business there for awhile....i recall some automakers were supposedly short supplies too. maybe that somehow plays a part in these cost spikes a year on(or has it been 2 now????)... :$

Thank god for my surplus shop!!

Still getting all the old goodies at a killer price. 10K locking Clarostats for $1.25, Orange drops for .99-$2

A few years ago, I picked up some 2,200uf 450V caps for $8 each.

They're the RN60 and RN65 series from Vishay - classic milspec stuff that has been around forever. On more recent designs I've switched to the non-milspec CMF stuff. I think the only difference is that they derate the dissipation one notch for the milspec modifier.

Shee-it. Just buy the cheapest film caps. They are all the same and probably all made in China, possibly at the same factory. Sprauge, the original manufacturer of orange drops, has been out of business for decades. The trade name just keeps changing hands among Asian suppliers.

I was just looking at the 715P .22 @ 600v caps and Mouser has two listings for the same part # 715P22456MD3. One is under the CDE brand at $8.67 and the other is Vishay Sprague @ $5.45! Country of origin is still in question. It looks like the orange drops need to head up to the snake oil section.

Just for s#!ts and grins I looked up the address of the "factory" these supposedly come from and it looks really small, as in there can't be much machinery inside.
