Antique Radio Supply has the superior 716 P {copper leads and True film instead of metallized film} ... 10 for 22 dollars and change {shipping included}

I would take THOSE orange drops over the WIMA MKP anyday.

However, WIMA, ERO/VISHAY MKC capacitors {Polycarbonate, 8 for 20 USD shipped on fleabay} have better detail and are smoother [:)

Of course caps are like spices, The REAL game changers are circuit topology and implementation... ie out put transformers, power supply...

Or you could help prop up the former Eastern Bloc and buy K40Y-9 PIO caps. IMHO, they beat the snot out of Orange Drops, CDE and Solen caps.

FYI, I think the old SBE stocks of the Orange Drops are about dried up. I'd get what you needed now, as it may be awhile before resellers stock up on the new CDE part. For example, Mouser doesn't have the 715P 0.1uF 600V cap (I'm revising the Ike parts list).
For all the mythos and disparagement regarding this series, there just isn't any other film and foil cap offered by the big resellers, right? Everything else is metallized film. I think I'll just use the Panasonic ECWFs as a place holder.

Orange drops are in stock at Antique Electronics Supply:

http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/C-R-600

In stock at Tube Depot, too:

http://www.tubedepot.com/orangedrop.html

There possibly are some substitutes. Solen "Fast" caps were mentioned earlier. In the link below, there is an unidentified cap, which is red, cheap and 630V. They might be Xicon.

Polypropylene at AES:

WIMA MKP series 2 (but the leads are short):

WIMA != Orange Drop in sonics. They are as different as a "fullrange vs. 3-way speaker" =:o

The Solen Fast caps and WIMA MKP2 are both metallized film, while the 715P is actually film and foil. I've used all of them, but just wondered if there was a real film and foil available at Mouser other than the classic Orange Drop line. Hopefully they'll fill up their inventories over the next year. I've been ordering small quantities from New Old Sound on eBay (keeps shipping prices down), but I see they're saying "Almost Gone":eBay Link

Now I'm trying to suss out all the Panasonic ECWF series, particulary the ECWF(L) and ECWF(A). Specs look the same, but the (A) is much cheaper.

Yes, I know. I was attempting to locate capacitors which "possibly are some substitutes" for Orange Drops.

Found another film and foil cap at Mouser: the forgotten Xicon PD Series.
Datasheet
Mouser Link

Sussed this out while double-checking the parts list. I've actually used this part as the LTP AC-grounding cap for almost ten years. Unfortunately the only stocked, usable value is 250V rated. I've attached a pic of a Xicon PD 250V, 0.1uF (foil) smashed open and a Panasonic EWF(A) 250V, 0.1uF (metallized). The size is the giveaway. The metallized film is super thin stuff, hence the big size savings. The metal looks like it was put on with a device similar to a laser printer.

Panasonic ECWF(L) are "Metallized Polypropylene", too:

Panasonic ECWF(A) are "Metallized Polypropylene", too:

Panasonic ECWF(B) are "Metallized Polypropylene", too:

Panasonic ECWF(D) are "Metallized Polypropylene", too:

The only caps which look like film and foil are below at AES. I think they are Xicon:

[EDIT]
I missed the prior post. Perhaps, the Xicon's at Mouser are the same as the ones at AES.

I know the ECWFs are all metallized caps, but they're good, have lots of values, and are always in stock. My question with them is all the variations. Most of the datasheet charts look the same to me. I suppose it is more the target application than anything (capacitance values versus voltage ranges type of stuff): TVs or lighting ballasts or power supplies. Or tube amps. :{)

I missed your prior post. Perhaps, the Xicon's from Mouser are the same as the ones from AES, which I linked to yesterday and today.

The length of the AES caps are the same as the Panasonic ECWFs, so they must be metallized. That series is a pretty standardized size from what I can tell. For example, all the Chinese ones on eBay look to be the same construction and size as the Panasonics and AES caps. They are sold with CBB in the subject title on eBay, though the markings on the cap are ABC.

I really wish I could've worked on the component side of the Panasonic/Mashushita factory right out of college. Instead I assembled 6x9 speakers.

Panasonic does make a Polypropylene Film Cap. It is not available from Mouser, though. Digikey has them.

Polypropylene Film Capacitor
Type: ECQP(U)
Non-inductive construction using Polypropylene film with flame retardant epoxy resin coating

Features
• Low loss and excellent frequency characteristics

http://media.digikey.com/pdf/Data%20She ... 28U%29.pdf

I have NO idea what brand the AES cap is. It has no markings. I speculated Xicon.
