the pops and crackles are constant not just when I adjust the volume, where would be the best place to get wire to replace the signal wire?

sorry about all the black wire it was just what I had lying around :P

what would be the best way to clean the pins?

If you have vintage tubes and the pins have a kind of thin waxy, yellow/green look under a magnifying glass then a cleaner called Deoxit D5 applied and rubbed well with a Q-tip has worked very well. I've also "sinned" in a pinch by using fine black silicon carbide 600 grit sandpaper. But you have to be gentle with it and stop as soon as possible so not to sand through the plating.

Parts Express
MCM

Or save the shipping charges by going to a flea market and search for a solid set of shielded RCA audio cables for $0.50 and cut the ends off.
