but since the 5y3 is directly heated doesn't some of the voltage/current hit the tubes before it's heats up?

SO! it has done that since the very first tube rectifer back in the 1920's , and before that , they used to turn off radios by disconecting the filament supply and leaving the B and C batteries connected , so the B+ was there all the time .

ok so then no danger of premature tube death, thats cool didn't know that was how they use to work.

Update I bought Edcor outputs to upgrade the motorola, and I'm almost finised building my preamp, It took a chunk outta my finger when I was working on it yesterday, seems that it's not an official project of mine until I end up hurting myself :P :$

my friend sugested I put a fuse on the motorola to be safe thoughts and what size should I use?
