Hookup Wire?

Postby coop402 » Sat Jan 14, 2012 11:19 pm

I am looking for some reasonably priced hookup wire that meets the demands of larger tube amps.

I have been using Consolidated 105c 300v stranded, just because I had a ton of it, and all my projects were lower power.

It seems that this subject has a lot of voodoo surrounding it.
I know that Rozenblitz recommends solid core wire for ease of wiring, and the fact that it stays where you put it. I think my wiring would be a lot cleaner without using stranded.

Others say that stranded is the only way to go......
I personally find it harder to work with.

I like to use many colors, simply for tracing back problems. So wire can be rather costly to me.

Any ideas, suggestions welcome.

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

Enamelled CU-wire is great as it stays where it is applied.
I am no "fanatic" so I normally use what I find in my drawers.

I use Kimber TCSS almost exclusively. I get mine from Handmade Electronics. http://www.hndme.com/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=145
It is 19 gauge stranded with teflon jacket. The stranding is multi gauge so if you buy into any of the voodoo you're covered. It stays put like solid core and is easy to work with. Also available in many colors. The major downside is that at $1/ft it's a little expensive.

I use affordable silver plated copper, Teflon jacketed.

Teflon is definitely overrated ......

... the best insulator you can find. It doesn't mel like ordinary plastic insulators.

I, too, prefer solid hookup wire, tinned copper. Otherwise, my only other major consideration is the size of the wire - for, example, AWG 20 or 22 for signal wire and AWG 18, or larger for power wire, depending upon amperage.
