Last Sunday's meeting!

Postby TerrySmith » Tue Apr 22, 2008 11:05 am

We had a very nice get-together at Mark Lucas' house in Knoxville! There was a lot of very interesting gear showed up.

There were four McIntosh SS power amps, one Mc preamp, Dr Bob's MK3's, My getsetgo, Mark's ST-35, Morat's Leach SS amp, and a pair of DIY speakers that Mark and Morat built.

Did you do any comparative listening between the amps? It would be interesting to see how a GSG and a ST-35 stacks up against all those famous name brand amps.

I had been in contact with Mark Lucas a couple years ago, he was a virtual wealth of information about the Karlson speakers, and he sent me quite a lot of very useful information pertaining to them.

His information got me going on putting them to great use with good sounding drivers, and ditching the original bad sounding Utah FR drivers (which were basically rotted out and rusted to death).

I'll look him up once I get settled in down south.

Yes we did listen to all the amps, the Diy-35 and the getsetgo really held their own against the high powered Macs!

Ed, the dogwoods are blooming!

What are those groups of eight resistors doing around the LTP on the Mk3 amps?

looks like 68K 2 watters in some sort of series-parallel arrangement. Not ethe vertically mounted 100K resistor off to their right. Some applications, the old style CC 1W or 2Wreistors are preferred to newer metal films.

MK III driver board resistors

Postby logos47 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 2:20 pm

Ty, The eight resistors look like straight pipes comming out of a '57 Chevy engine, don't they? These are 1W cc to beef up the board just a tad. I will be replacing them with two 5W metal film resistors to make tube rolling and fitting with tube dampers (HAL-O?) easier. Hate to lose the hot rod look, though. DrBob

So, they're the plate loads on the LTP? Geez, I think the schematic only called for a 2W part there. Looks pretty cool, though. I guess if it's worth doing it, it's worth over-doing it!

errr, sorry, I will be replacing the CC resistors with 2x 5W wire wound. Good heat dissipation and good headroom.

Dr Bob, I would not use a wirewound in a signal path as it could cause oscillations, pick up noise, etc.

2w metal films are fine. 3w metal films were on the BOM because Mouser was out of 2w.

Yes, it is fun and the music comming through those Linn speakers built by Murat and Mark had a combination of depth and remarkable refinement. Thanks, Terry!
