rec.audio.tubes: What happened that forum

Postby rca7591a » Thu Apr 17, 2008 12:02 pm

I used to lurk in rec.audio.tubes. Starting back around 1996 or so. Found some parts, tubes and used gear there. Met some interesting people. Read many interesting posts. But the topics in the forum turned away from tubes and tube related issues.

All I see now is a lot of bickering, trading of insults and just general madness.

Now I just download all posts from the forum and just filter the text according to my interests.

I hear a lot of former rec.audio.tube members are here in this forum now. One in particular, from whom I got a nice set of used 7591a's from.

How many former rec.audio.tube lurkers here?

I used to post often back around 96-99 ... before I built anything from scratch, when I was mostly restoring Dynaco stuff ... it was a nice group - I learned a lot.

I can't say I truly ever lurked on RAT, and I definitely never posted anything there. I probably do have a couple saved threads from about 8 years back, though...

Patrick Turner posts some incredibly detailed essays about his projects and opinions, concerning tube audio, to that group.

I e-mailed him with one question about the 807 tube. He responded with a literal, book-sized e-mail, including a series of arcane equations. It made my head spin.

I asked him to comment on the diytube st-70 driver board. He said it is a nice design, but it is definitely '1960's technology'.

Former participant here.

Back in the days it was something decent.

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.
