Well, it finally happened, One of the Mesa/Sovtek 6L6s on my eiclone went roman candle mode. It took out three resistors: the two that sub for the choke and the 10 ohm cathode resistor. Filled my house with the stink of burning electronics.
I cut the tube apart and found this:
The screen grid is burned away in several spots but the curious thing is that the wires are still straight, I thought they would be all saggy and tangled. When I cut the screen grid away, the control grid was perfect apart from the scorching from the burning screen grid. The cathode also had several scorch marks on it.
Gee, I love tubes, they're so literal. If the schematic shows dotted lines, well sure enough there's a dotted line. Beam forming plates look just like you think they would. With sand everything is metaphorical, the schematic has nothing to do with structure. Ironic that as we move away from the age of metaphor and allegory, electronics becomes less literal.
Don
