James 6123HS OPTs or other alternatives

Postby SDS-PAGE » Tue Jan 15, 2008 10:59 am

I getting parts together to build a pair of SE 300B monoblocks for a friend, and I discovered that Euphonia is out of JS 6123HS. I talked to the guy and he told me that he is getting more in 5 weeks or so. My problems is that I can't wait that long. So, I just wanted to brainstorm with you guys to see if there are any other alternatives. These are my parameters:

-SE 2.5-3.5k into 8 ohms 130 mA+, or at least one that will give me an option of making primary as such
-has to be at least over 2.5 kg each
-can spend up to $350 - $400 on a pair
-has to be enclosed in a black rectangular box

I looked at SILK OPTs and was going to order a pair, but the distributor in US (www.auralthrillsaudio.com) is not even around due to personal circumstances. I also looked at Hashimotos, but they seem very costly.
What luck! Anwhoo, I would appreciate your input on this. -Min

P.S. Who supplies Tamuras and Tangos in the US?

Im not quite sure who supplies Tamura in the US; but I need to find out as well.....

As for other transformer suppliers; check:

http://www.magnequest.com

and

http://www.heyboer.com

Heyboer will custom wind anything you want; and their turn around time is usually under 2 weeks (They spit out a quad of custom DCR spec'd chokes for me in a week).

The Magnequest FS-030 is the "ideal" 300B OPT, but then it's quite pricey, around $360 each (not per pair).

Specs here: http://www.magnequest.com/030.htm

A far less costly alternative is the Transcendar 15W, 3K OPTs often appearing on E_bay, sold by "ggaet". I don't know how they "stack up" against the James 6123s or MQs, so YMMV...

In either case, these are rated 100 mA max, 300Bs like to run around 70 to 80 mA.

I have used 10W version of Transcendars in a GSG 300B hybrid before with much success. I think they compare to One Electron OPTs at half the price. [/url]
