JE Labs 2A3 Amplifier from angela.com

Postby Slartibartfast » Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:13 am

Merry Christmas all,

I am planning on building this amp to drive my Klipsch LaScala speakers. They have a sensitivity rating of 102db/1w/1 meter

Can anyone comment on this amp?

Thank you,

Robert - wishing he was in N.C.

Hi Robert -

I built a JE Labs 2A3 a few years ago ...

I went all out with oil caps, high end coupling caps,
and transformers from Eastern Audio ...

I used a 5Z3 rectifier, and two drivers rather
than one (basically for looks)

Nice lil amp.

Very nice. The one I am looking at has two drivers. Here is the schematic, that I forgot in my original post.

Excellent design. Joseph Esmilla is our American answer to the Japanese 'SET revolution' of the 90's.

I'm building a simple 45/2A3 right now, except it's on hold until I get back from my vacation. The chassis is done. It will be built on a 16x13 12 ga aluminum plate with 2.5" tall red oak woodbase. After much deliberation, I am going with James 6123H (20W 3.5k) driven by a pair of Sovtek 2A3s. Solen caps in the PS + Hammond PT and choke. I look forward to hearing it.

I have a question, how much B+ current does that amp really needs as I have a few power transformers with 2.5 vac secondaries but I forget the current ratings on the B+ secondary. I will have to go in the basement and take a look. It seems like a 200ma secondary on the B+ seems a little excessive.

Sal,

I am also in the process of building this amp. I do not know the actual current draw, but the 10H choke is only rated for 150mA.

Maybe Tom or Min can measure the maximum current on the B+ side. How much current can it take at 3 watts per channel?

I get around 65V drop across 1.5K, so I have 43 mA through those 2A3. As for B+, I am getting around 10V drop across 102 ohms of Hammond 193G, so that's about 98 mA. Not sure if I am doing this right.

The PSU choke carries all the B+ current, from both 2A3s, 6SL7(s), bleeder resistors, etc, so the 98 mA through the choke seems about right (86 goes to the 2A3s, 12 for everything else).
