OT: Quarter Shrinking

Maybe someone wants to build a money shrinking rig out of their caps and trannies.

Theory of Operation:
The Quarter Shrinker uses a technique called high velocity electromagnetic forming, or "Magneforming". This is a "high energy rate" process that was originally developed by the aerospace industry in conjunction with NASA, and has been popularized by Aerovox, Grumman, and Maxwell. It involves quickly discharging a high energy capacitor bank through a work coil to generate a very powerful, rapidly changing magnetic field which then "forms" the metal to be fabricated. The technique uses pulsed power to generate an extremely high current pulse over a very short interval. Although electromagnetic forming works best with metals that have relatively high electrical conductivity (such as copper, silver, or aluminum), it will also work to a limited extent with poorer conducting metals or alloys such as steel or nickel.

With a few mechanical alterations, this gadget could probably launch a quarter ort any other metallic object through a cinderblock wall! Rail-guns, anybody ?

The arcs 'n' sparks section is pretty cool, too!

Fine wine comes in glass bottles, not plastic sacks. Therefore the finer electrons are also found in glass bottles.

Railguns are legit... or at least the US Navy is working on them. My buddy is a weapons engineer for them.

The basic rail-gun uses a series of sequentially fired coils, and the velocity of the projectile can be controlled by the intensity of the magnetic fields, and how much stored up energy can be dumped into each coil, and most importantly, the sequencing inverval, which has to be pretty darn fast..

Friend of mine experimentd with this concept many moons ago, and used some "Crytron" type gas switching tubes, that he found at a local area surplus / electro-junk store back in the late 60s / early 70's. Yup, these were the same "Crytrons" which were used to fire the electrical detonators in a nuke :o :o :o Yeah, he worked on those, too, while he was in the military.

The concept worked, but he never pursued it to achieve its full potential. Probably a good thing... He (somehow) survived his "mad scientist" phase, but then a brain anyeurism took him out at age 52, in 1994.
