8 Ohm Dummy Load Resistors

Postby sorenj07 » Mon Oct 22, 2007 1:46 am

Is something like this OK? http://tinyurl.com/2xcvt7
I'm thinking four, in an H-shaped configuration for 100W 8 ohm.

Or should I really try for something like this? http://tinyurl.com/2y94p8

Or might this one be OK too? http://tinyurl.com/26dogk

Or should I just go to Mouser and get one of their chassis-mount models? I'd rather not have to work any metal to mount them, mostly because I don't have any of my metal-working tools here! Yellow_Light_Colorz_PDT_07

You might as well grab several of those cement ones, as they are handy. You'll probably want two to load those stereo amps. I like that Parts Express load - might have to grab one with my next order. Nice find.

If you plan on building up some higher power amps, go for the pParts Express loads, they should be more than adequate for 99.9% of all test requirements.

The smaller (and less expensive) 8 ohm, 25W resistors should be fine for lower power testing, or short-term higher power. They're probably "inductive"which doesn't metter except for precise instrument testing. For dummy load usage, they're perfectly good.
For higher power, a simple series-parallel arrangement will work.

(For 4 ohms, use 2 in parallel, for 16 ohms, two in series, etc...)
