Dynaco ST-70 output trannies

Postby mugsy » Thu Sep 13, 2007 3:56 pm

Hi there!

I'm in the process of purchasing parts to make a dynakit ST-70 reproduction/

I notice that both Triode Electronics, and Dynakit Parts offer replacement A-470-S output transformers.

Has anyone used either one of these? They both claim to be accurate reproductions, but I am curious if either are more accurate than the other?

Any advise here would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

- John

The trannies sold by both vendors are built
to the original A-470 specs. They are
reported to be the same item, as one
manufacturer makes them and sells them to
both triode and dynakitparts.

They are a bit pricey to some, but even if
you buy a pair of used A-470s off of e-bay,
that would set you back ~$125.

I have the replacement ST-70 power transformers from both Dynakit Parts and Triode and they are definitely different. Don't know about the OPT's though. I think the ones from Triode now have teflon insulated leads. That doesn't mean they aren't sourced from the same place. Maybe Ned can chime in.

BTW, my shipment from Dynakit Parts had the best packing job I've ever seen!

The jury is still out on who makes the best replacement transformers. Here are a couple of previous threads that may help you decide:

Many thanks for your replies guys - that gives me more to go on now.

I'll have a read through those other two threads now.

I know for sure that the dynakit part guys don't get their transformers from the transformer house we get ours done at. The engineer at our place said that Dynakit parts had contacted him when starting up to see about getting them done there but didn't like how much it was going to cost to produce them so they went somewhere else. I don't know where they ended up getting theirs from though. I've never got a chance to look at them and run any tests against ours so I can't say how they stack up. It would be interesting if someone would do a shootout of our triode 470's against theirs and see how they compare.

Hi Matt!

Are the Triode transformers - specifically the A470 - exact reproductions of the originals (well electrically at least? I know materials have changed since).

I just want to get some output transformers which are an exact match for the originals as I am building a ST-70 clone.

Many thanks.

a very quick foray into the Triode website will yield you gems such as this:

Dynakit Transformers

Postby Dynakitguy » Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:35 pm

Hi All,
Matt from Triode is correct; We do not get our audio transformers from the same source in Chicago.

I have spoken with these people in Chicago early on in this business venture, however our decision to go eleswhere was not due to cost although they do make quality transformers and are very knowledgeable.

Like Triode, our transformers are made here in the USA and based on the original Dynaco specifications. Which is better?

Personally, I prefer the Magnequest transformers but unfortunately these are no longer available.

Best regards Kevin @ Dynakit

I guess if the people have used both and had success I shouldn't really lose any sleep over which to use, and they both claim to follow the original specs - I do like the idea of the teflon insulated leads on the Triode ones though - makes them easier to solder, more resistant to any heat abuse.
