We have always been trying to leave home for longer or shorter periods. Even when we were practically broke, we still tried to save up so we could take a bus tour for a week and see small parts of Europe. As our daughter moved to Chicago we started touring USA and by then we were both working and saving every penny we have left.
A few years ago we took the US concept - fly/rental car - to Europe and have toured Sicily and Ireland.
But we haven't seen much of our neighborhood until we bought a car from my brother a year ago. Since then we have taken shorter trips mayby 10-20 miles on recommendations from my job mates. This weekend we drove to Anten-Grafsnas railroad, an 8 mile railroad run by enthusiasts -

It takes us just 40 minutes to go there, which is as long it takes to go the 8 mile line by steamtrain. All staff is dressed accordingly, you buy your little cardboard ticket and have the trainmaster snap a hole in it.
By the end of the line you may help turn the 47 ton loco around and halfway see how water is filled to the tanks and hear the story of the whole line which was closed in the 70's.
I think there's so much to see where we live. "Dig where you stand" is a Swedish expression, meaning that whatever you plan to do, start looking in your area (or check your box of tube before calling Tubes&More ...).
We have a really nice walk on the wild and dramatic lakefront. It takes us just half an hour to where we turn back but have a great view over the lake, our town, the boats going to from the canal. This view is so common to us that I cannot say it is AMAZING; but maybe it is amazing as the Everglades, Zion NP or HWY1. Maybe visitors drop their jaws when walking along that narrow footpath.
OH, need to explaing. The sign saying "Orenande förbjudes vid laga påföljd", means simply "If you litter we will take you to court". An the sign next to Mrs K says "Storage of explosive materials".
