AudioRay,
Actually, I'm happy with the standard 6p14p tubes. Since you are operating at lower voltages than the EL84 PP amps, you don't even have to worry about EV types either. But all the standard EL84 types (JJ, Sovtek, etc.) will work great.

Hi All,
New to the site.
I think I may try the budgie- coming from guitar tube amps to HI-FI.

RE: Tubes
Why no shield on the 12ax7?
Many questions to come.
Thanks,
MacL

In this case, the 12AX7 is handling relatively high (approx 1 volt rms input) audio signal voltages, so the shielding isn't necessary, as it would be in a high-gain phono stage or guitar amp input stage, which is dealing with low-millivolt audio signals, and which would be much more susceptible to being influenced by external EM fields..
