I built this Clementine/Darling this afternoon, finished when it was dark enough for the flash to kick in on my camera. Edcor XPWR257-120 Power Transformer and Edcor GXSE10-8-5K Outputs, Hammond 156R Chinese choke. Playing now and sounding sweet.

Very nice! How do you build it so quickly? Building mine took several days. The benefit of experience, eh? (lol)

Correct - I just counted, I've built 13, experience and assembly line techniques ! I should make a YouTube video.

I just watched a video to see if I could fix my icemaker. It's a mechanical nightmare. A timing motor rotates though a cycle that turns on the water valve for 7 seconds to fill the tray, waits an hour or so for the water to freeze, turns on a heating coil to loosen the cubes (or in my case, giant lump of ice) then fingers rotate around to push the ice into the bin, and an arm swings over to make sure the bin isn't overfilled. Repeat unless it's full. They have a silly screw adjustment for the fill time, since high or low water pressure may mean you need more or less than 7 seconds. It has +/- arrows and says "don't turn more than 1/2 turn" OK ... where's the starting point ? What if it was turned previously ? So do I mess with the adjustment forever, which turns the freezer into an iced up Niagara Falls, or buy a new assembly for $ 55 (free shipping) or rip it all apart and add some relays and a BASIC Stamp computer and LED display of status and timing, or better yet, advanced ice sensing technique and water level sensor. Decisions are difficult.

Hi Tom,

Have you tried Triad's chokes? They actually test better at Imax than Chinese made (not the Canadian made ones) Hammonds for the 6H and 10H versions.

The downside is the DCR of the Triad's are a little higher. The plus side is they're the same size or smaller.

Cheers!

I have used Triads, mostly Hammond, Triode USA and dynakitparts shielded chokes are good too.

By the way, the Edcor XPWR257-120 power transformer in the new Clementine/Darling actually runs cool to the touch. It's loafing along. No transformer smell. Do they sell that at Pep Boys ?

You definitely should make some youtube videos, the knowledge you have to share would help many many people. Plus, who doesn't like to see amps get built?!?! :D

thanks tom. new here and getting the feel of the place.
Just starting on exploratory to build a Darling 1626amp.
This seems to be the place to be with the info.
SO that 1626 BOM is all the parts that go on the PC bd and elsewhere around the amp?
I also hang out on AK. Please dont hold it against me. hehehe.

Hey Pete !

You'll have a sweet little amp when you're finished.
The Mouser "direct link" will fill out a parts order. I just checked, and there are two part they are out of stock on, or the numbers have changed.
The coupling caps are good with # 598-715P22456MD3
and the 300K resistor : 281-300K-RC

The other things you will need are three octal PC mount tube sockets, 3/8" aluminum spacers, IEC connector and fuse holder, RCA jacks and speaker binding posts, also a Hammond 156R choke. Mouser has everything but the tube sockets, you can get them from many places, Angela, Handmade, AES and many others.

Yell if you have questions. You might read the posts on here. My best advice is to avoid drilling holes in the chassis until you have all of the parts, and to use the PCBoard as a template. It has 6 mounting holes and three tube socket holes, mark a dot on the chassis at all 9 spots and go from there. The IEC power connector hole isn't easy, you can always go with a connected power cord, look at John's pictures.

Tom, The replacement coupling caps on the Mouser list are a min order of 1000. Maybe you will build enough Clementines but for the rest of us mere mortals....
Every time I click replacement, I get min of 1000.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve

Wonder why it keeps coming up in red? No worries, I found both parts at AES....I needed sockets and a 12SL anyway.
Thanks!!! I'll try harder to come up with my own answer next time before I bother you.

Those CDE orange drops certainly are excellent quality. But.. they are a bit pricey. I have used Panasonic's ECW-FA2J224J without apparent problem. And one can buy more than 10 of the Panasonics for the price of 1 CDE. Am I missing some sonic goodness by using the Panasonics?

Where does the good looking black chassis come from?

edit: Nevermind, I know now.
