low volume with iphone

Postby djonesii » Sat Dec 19, 2015 7:40 am

got the clemintine all wired up with edcors in UL

using iphone as source,it seems that the watts output is very low. relative to a 15w class d amp, seems the volume only goes to 4

not using a pre amp.

speakers are a 3in single driver in open baffle test set up.

so, is this normal?

next test is with DVD instead of iphone

You need a preamp.

An iPhone is not designed to drive an amp direct, just earbuds ;)

Put it in the living room on some more efficient speakers, driven by a Raspberry Pi with a USB DAC, and things are much much better!

Still not the same volume as my chip amp though ... Very different sound

Set up in a wooden temp chassis ...

How long should it take for tubes to break in? .... about 30 hours seems to stick in mind

I forgot to add, does fill the living room with more that loud enough sound for the way I listen to the Blues these days.

In younger days, more watts was better =:o

The Darling Clementine is only 3/4 of a watt per channel. It's not going to compete with a 15 watt amp.

There is no break in time. Those tubes are 70+ years old. They warm right up and play music in 15 seconds !

cough ... cough.... a clear case of RTFM going on by ME here.

Clearly in the UL hookup, the PDF listed in the sticky part of this thread says that in this mode, I cannot use an Ipod to drive it, by extension, that applies to an iPhone as well.

However, there are measurements listed for 7W in the manual. I read that to be PER Chanel, so a Celm in UL with 6L6GC = ~14W ??
