I just emailed Jack of Electra Print to inquire about getting his transformers to upgrade my darling amp and he said the opt for 1626 tubes should be 10K. Is this right. Thanks.

Jack was always a fan of trading off maximum output power for lowered distortion. I'm not surprised he would recommend a 10k OT.

Can I simply take his advise and put the 10K opt inplace of the 5K without any modification to the circuit. Thanks.

No prob to use 10K. What's the difference between .5W and .75W in this case anyway, right? (lol)

IIRC, my 1626s at tested at around 2.7K Rp, so the rule of thumb of 3 times Rp puts it in-between 5K and 10K. Can't lose either way.

Heehehehe, i can't really lose much can I.

.75w vs .5 clean power W..... [:)

I will try Jack's transformers. Thanks.

I would prefer a 10k rather than a 5k OT. Yesterday, I compared a vintage 12k OT with an Edcor XSE 5k type. Frequency response were almost identical. The Edcor sound significantly louder, that's right. But look at the distortion curves.

The 12K OT:

The Edcor:

These measurements might not be 100% accurate. However, these curves show clearly that the 12k OTs significantly reduce distortion. BTW, we don't talk about distortion produced by the output transformer. This distortion comes from the tubes.
