807 Clementine Ultra - volume pot value?

Postby whaam68 » Mon Mar 12, 2012 7:35 am

Well it's been a couple of weeks & I'm still enjoying & tweaking the amp rolling different 807's & 6SL7's. I moved from a cheapo ebay russian to an old military USN 6SL7 & it really smoothed the mid range. One question I do have is re the best volume pot value...I used an old Alps pot I pulled from a previous project & it works fine. I think it's 50K, there is only just enough gain I have to crank it round to 3/4 full to get in the ballpark & on some material I just about run out. Definately less than when fed direct from my Yaquin MS12B active pre....any thoughts on a "better" value?
Thanks
Mike

Since this is just a passive device with no gain, your volume adjust range would stay the same with a 100K pot as the voltage divider ratio remains the same. So you would need an active preamp with extra gain if you wanted more adjustment.

Of course you could triode your 807s and defeat all your ULtra mods (and feedback) for more gain, but that would undo all your work. ;)
